Abstract

"Evil Eyes" hang from a tree, the presence of these amulets is meant to ward off the evil eye from yourself or your family. (Photo: https://images.app.goo.gl/MnRqYLPCfhnY1jVq9)

Folk illnesses (also called culture bound syndromes) occur all over the world and are the product of deeply rooted beliefs in superstitions that manifest as both physical and mental health issues. It is my goal to analyze the folk illness called “Mal de ojo” which occurs in many different societies, but for the purpose of this project I will focus on the folklore from Latin America. In addition to discussing the history, causes, symptoms, and remedies, I will use an anthropological perspective to show how cultures have cultivated this phenomenon over time and space.
